Tilos, an Aegean island belonging to the Dodecanese, is the first in the Mediterranean to produce electricity entirely from renewables, thanks to the European project Tilos Horizon 2020 - Technology Innovation for the Local Scale, Optimum Integration of Battery Energy Storage.
The project involved the construction of plants from renewable sources for a power of almost 1000 kW (800 wind and 160 solar energy) and storage systems for the storage of electricity. Thanks to the new systems the island is now able to satisfy the electricity demand for the 500 inhabitants of the winter period, but also for the 3 thousand tourists which register in August. The old submarine power line connected to the Kos diesel power plant - the one that guaranteed electricity until a few months ago - now works only in case of need.
