The mayor of Ustica has also signed the trade union ordinance which prohibits both the use and sale of disposable plastic containers and tableware.
“Dishes, cutlery, glasses, trays, straws, poles for coffee or ice cream - reads the text of the ordinance - have environmental consequences with a harmful impact both in terms of waste production and disposal. The replacement of plastic with biodegradable materials, on the contrary, allows us to significantly reduce the environmental impact ".
The new rules came into force on May 30, 2019 and are valid for residents, homeowners on the island, businesses (restaurateurs, supermarkets, bars and street vendors) and tourists. Fines for offenders from 25 to 500 euros are foreseen. For repeat traders, the suspension of the commercial sales activity is envisaged, from 1 to 7 working days until the revocation of the sales license if the prohibition should be repeated beyond measure. It will be the municipal police who will enforce the order.
