From September 2018 Lampedusa has become plastic free.
All resident and non-resident citizens of the municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa and commercial businesses operating in the municipal area, both permanent and traveling, are prohibited from using and / or providing non-biodegradable plastic bags (shoppers). Certified biodegradable and compostable bags must be used instead, such as, for example, those made of bioplastic materials of vegetable origin, cellulose, paper, canvas or natural fibers. It is also forbidden to use non-biodegradable disposable containers and tableware.
Citizens residing in Lampedusa and Linosa have the obligation to acquire and use, exclusively, disposable shopping bags made of paper or other biodegradable material, or reusable mesh bags made of fabric or fabric or other material suitable by law. For violators there are administrative penalties of 25 to 500 euros.
