It is the largest island of the Manu'a group, with its 44,31 km² and 600 inhabitants, it is the most eastern of Samoa, in the Pacific Ocean.
The island built one in 2016 micro grid based on the best available technology, which has allowed it to achieveenergy self-sufficiency. It is made up of 5.328 SolarCity photovoltaic modules that produce 1,4 MW and 60 batteries that store 6 MWh; whose generation is supported by the Tesla Powerpack storage system, able to fully charge in just 6 hours of light, to overcome the daily variability of photovoltaic production and ensure an uninterrupted flow of energy for 72 hours. The project was funded entirely by public bodies: the American Samoa Economic Development Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Interior.
The system is predicted to put 415 thousand liters of fossil fuel out of play annually.
