In the recent Clean Energy for All Europeans package, islands have found a special place as territories that can "provide platforms for pilot initiatives on the clean energy transition and can act as showcases internationally". Covenant of Mayors (CoM) and Pact of Islands (PoI) helped pave the way for the island's local and regional authorities to plan their own path towards energy transition and climate adaptation and commit to achieving their goals.
The European Commission launched the EU Island Clean Energy Initiative in 2017 to support island decarbonisation. The European Island Facility was also established in 2019 to provide financial assistance to clean energy projects on islands. The first two of the Covenant of Mayors webinar series aiming to empower the islands to meet their energy and climate goals will focus on Greece and Croatia. Spanish, Portuguese and Nordic webinars will follow.
In the first Greek webinar, the discussion will focus on how Greek PoI and CoM island signatories can be supported to implement their iSEAP / SEAP / SECAP, how PoI membership is simplified with CoM, and how signatories can align their plans for 2030 climate adaptation goals. Subsequently, official support from the European Commission will be presented, namely the EU Islands Clean Energy Secretariat and the European Islands Mechanism (NESOI H2020 project).
Finally, we will present successful climate and energy solutions and methodologies among the island community, such as the Greek island projects TILOS and Naeras, the climate adaptation planning of the Municipality of Strovolos in Cyprus and the clean energy transition of the Municipality of Samsoe. , Orkney and Madeira in the frame of the H2020 SMILE project.
