The island of Elba aims to become a model of social innovation and sustainability thanks to the commitment and guidance of the local company, Acqua dell'Elba. In June 2021 the Sustainability Manifesto of the Island of Elba was presented, a document created as part of a project promoted by the Acqua dell'Elba local company in collaboration with the consulting company EY which coordinated the work . The manifesto was built through a participatory process lasted months and which involved municipalities, companies and various realities of the territory, with which they wanted to focus on the pillars on which to work to become fully sustainable by 2035. It is a programmatic summary document on the vision of the future that the inhabitants have of their island, focused on sustainability and grounding the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
The participants include the most important stakeholders in politics, the environment, the management of territorial resources, infrastructures, economic associations, culture, tourism and schools on the Island of Elba.
The listening process focused on three main themes:
- Sustainable tourism: creation of a tourism model capable of feeding the benefits of the local community and the offer for visitors while respecting the island's resources. Hence, the connection with mobility and transport: public and private transport, external mobility to / from the island with ferries, to which the issue of the island's supply chain and rail and air connections is linked.
- Culture, identity and lifestyles: construction and enhancement of territorial identity, made up of culture, education, health, history; redevelopment of urban centers, in order to generate opportunities and attractiveness both from the point of view of capital and young talents, up to the protection of the rights of every citizen.
- Environment and beauty of the territory: enhancement of the landscape, maintaining its beauty also with a view to sustainable revolution of energy, water and waste collection systems.
