The Council of Ministers approved, upon proposal from the Ministers for Regional Affairs and for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, the bill for the development of smaller marine, lagoon, and lake islands.
The measure recognizes the island's unique nature as a disadvantage and promotes sustainable development based on environmental protection, territorial innovation, and social cohesion.
Among the most significant measures are the establishment of a Fund for the Development of Smaller Islands, with an increasing budget until 2028, and the introduction of the Single Programming Document for Smaller Islands (DUPIM), intended to coordinate integrated development strategies and projects between municipalities, regions, and the state.
The bill also includes measures to improve accessibility, healthcare, education, local mobility, waste management, and energy sustainability, along with tax breaks and measures for sustainable tourism.
The Ministry of Tourism has announced a €6 million allocation for the three-year period 2026–2028 for training and technical support for island municipalities, aimed at strengthening administrative capacity and designing sustainable tourism initiatives.
