The Estonian islands of Muhu, Kihnu, Hiiumaa, and Vormsi, part of the West Estonian Archipelago, have been selected as Follower Islands under the European "30 for 30" program promoted by the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat. The initiative supports the islands in strengthening local energy planning capacities through technical support, expert advice, and the exchange of experiences at the European level.
According to the Clean Energy for EU Islands platform, the participating territories are developing local energy plans that integrate renewable sources, digital tools, and smart systems to optimize energy use and storage. The approach adopted aims to make island energy systems more efficient and resilient, taking into account the geographic and demographic characteristics of small islands and the active role of local governments in the transition process.
