The 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), underway with the participation of over 1.500 delegates including government representatives, institutions, and international stakeholders, has placed the global energy transition and the role of island countries and vulnerable island communities at the center of the discussion. Plenary sessions highlighted how renewable technologies—particularly solar and wind—account for the majority of new energy capacity installed worldwide, while also underscoring the need to accelerate action on energy resilience, security of supply, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels in island contexts, where climate and infrastructure challenges are most acute.
