On the Sicilian island, a team of Italian researchers has identified a natural environment with geological similarities to Mars and that could also simulate conditions on early Earth. The study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, is the result of a collaboration between the National Research Council (CNR), the National Institute for Environmental Protection (INAF), the University of Tuscia – Viterbo, and Sapienza University of Rome.
